Hi all. I blogged this week about bits and pieces including AF and fanfic of, and had a tweet back saying how lovely it would be to have a reader's guide to Antonia Forest fanfic. So I've put together an Antonia Forest fanfic guide with fics from Trennels, Archive of our Own, drabbles and Yuletide, categorised into Drabble, Yueltide and short fic, 'straightforward', missing scenes, future lives, crossovers, supporting characters, slash and AU.

Hope it's useful , and if I've missed some out, please let me know! Muchas gracias to all the writers, am trimmensely grateful.

I've nominated the Marlows books for [community profile] rarelywritten. If you'd like to find out more about this fic exchange there's an info post here. My character nominations are Nicola Marlow, Rowan Marlow, Tim Keith, Lawrie Marlow and Marie Dobson. But loads more characters would be eligible--all Forest's female characters are--so if you fancy nominating, go here. You'll need an AO3 account to nominate. The tag set is here: check it before you nominate to avoid duplication.

Since I have finally got round to editing my Marlow/Chalet School crossover, written some years ago, I have also got round to posting it on AO3.  If you are interested, you can find it here.

Rarely Written 2015 (formerly Rarewomen), a fic exchange focussing on underrepresented genders & sexes, is opening nominations soon. Lots of Forest characters will be eligible (basically characters of all gender alignments except cis men are eligible) so do go and check it out at [community profile] rarelywritten. I'll be nominating some Forest characters (haven't quite decided which ones yet!) but do discuss nominations you might be interested below or at the [community profile] rarelywritten nominations discussion post.

I hope everybody (who had one) enjoyed the break and (those who celebrate) it Christmas. Just another quick plug for Marlows fic in Yuletide 2014 (round-up post here). Thanks again to all the Yuletide writers and readers: I was delighted with the number of people who turned out to write Forest fic.

We'll be beginning the readthrough again on 16th January, with Cricket Term. [livejournal.com profile] coughingbear, to whom thanks, has very kindly offered to write the discussion posts for this novel.

Jan 16th: Chapters 1-3

There are five Marlows fics in this year's Yuletide collection, and one in Madness. This is a sixfold improvement on 2013! I don't quite know how it compares to years gone by, but I'm delighted to see it nonetheless. Well done to all the authors: do make sure you check them all out and give the writers some Yuletide love: kudos and comment if you feel moved. It looks like the main collection will open tonight at midnight UTC, and Madness 24 hours after that.
[identity profile] lilliburlero.livejournal.com
Edit: the Marlows didn't make the nominations cut, but signups are open for this exchange until 31st Dec, in case anyone's interested in the fandoms that did make it.

Just in case Yuletide's not enough for you, here's another exchange which might be of interest to writers of Marlows fic. Fandoms need to be seconded to make it to the tag set, so if anyone is interested in seconding mine, head on over.

Galentine's Day

Galentine's Day - Inspired by the celebration of the same name on the show Parks & Recreation, Galentine's Day is a celebration of the ladies in our fannish lives, with an exchange of fanfic about the lives and relationships of our favorite lady characters.

I'm delighted to report that 11 people have requested Marlows fic and 6 have offered to write it for Yuletide. Some of the request letters are here. Remember, anyone with an AO3 account can write treats or pinch hit for Yuletide, so even if you didn't sign up for the main exchange you can still participate.

It's likely that people will want beta readers (i.e., readers who'll offer constructive criticism and editorial help with stories) for Marlows fic. If you're prepared to beta read, please comment below, including the following information.

Name/username: (esp. if you don't have an lj/dw)
AO3 username: (esp. if different from your lj/dw, so writers don't inadvertently send their fic to their recipient for beta reading)
Maximum length of fic I'll have the time to read:
Sort of help I can offer: (e.g. canon-picking, histori-picking, Britpicking, spelling and grammar &c.)
Stuff I don't want to read, if any: (violence, death, explicit sex &c.)
Way to contact: (lj/dw pm, email &c.--do just bear in mind this is a public comm. before sharing contact details.)
Any other details:

Wassail! Wassail!

Yuletide sign-ups are open until Sunday 26th October at 6pm UTC!

Details on how to sign up, including a link to the sign-up page. You need an AO3 account to sign up, but those have a very short waiting list (of less than a day now) I understand. You don't have to have nominated fandoms in order to sign up.

Both the 10 20th-century set Marlows books and the two historical novels are eligible, as two separate fandoms. Characters that are eligible are shown below.

The Marlows - Antonia Forest
Pomona Todd, Giles Marlow, Janice Scott, Lawrie Marlow, Miranda West, Miss Cromwell, Nicola Marlow, Patrick Merrick, Peter Marlow, Robert Anquetil, Rowan Marlow

Players - Antonia Forest
Nicholas Marlow

You do need to make 4 offers and 3 requests to participate in Yuletide, so it's not possible to participate in the main exchange on a Forest-only ticket, but there are lots of shared-interest fandoms that have been nominated this year. The full list is here.

Alternatively, you can write treats for people who've requested the fandom, which is a low-pressure way to participate if you'd like to write a story but don't want the risk of an official assignment at what is a very busy time for a lot of people. Anyone with an AO3 account can write treats.

Lots more Yuletide info can be found at the FAQ.

In due course I'll put up a post linking to Dear Yuletide Writer letters from people who've requested the Marlows: please comment below if you've requested the fandom. I will look at the DYW spreadsheets regularly (you betcha!) but there is a chance I might miss people. My own letter is here. Around assignment-time I'll also put up a post for people to volunteer to beta-read: please wait for that one to go up before commenting with your offer to beta, so the offers are all in the one place.

Wassail, wassail! (*cue Patrick and Rowan giggling*)

For those of you who are interested, the Yuletide tag set is now public.

The Marlows got a interesting character spread, I think: thanks to everyone who co-operated on it. Viz.:

The Marlows - Antonia Forest
Pomona Todd, Giles Marlow, Janice Scott, Lawrie Marlow, Miranda West, Miss Cromwell, Nicola Marlow, Patrick Merrick, Peter Marlow, Robert Anquetil, Rowan Marlow

Poor Ginty, Karen and Ann got no love, but you can't have everything...

The Players' series (a separate fandom in AO3 terms) was also nominated, with Nicholas as the only nominated character.

Do share your Marlows-related Yuletide thoughts if you feel inspired!

There was a bug on the AO3 that was keeping all of the Marlows fics from showing up - a lot of Ankaret's fics in particular. I managed to work out what was going on and the kind people at AO3 support seem to have fixed the problem.

So now you should be able to see 52 works rather than the 33 or so that were displaying before:

http://archiveofourown.org/tags/The%20Marlows%20-%20Antonia%20Forest/works

(There is a different disappearing-fics bug that strikes intermittently across the whole archive, but usually refreshing is enough to cure that one.)

Enjoy! Maybe the extra fics won't be new to others but they were new to me. :)

People are starting to co-ordinate nominations for the 2014 Yuletide fic exchange.

What's that? Yuletide FAQ..

Eligibility has changed this year, however, so people can only nominate 3 fandoms.

There's a LJ post devoted to general nomination discussions here. If you want to co-ordinate Marlows-specific nominations, feel free to comment below.

The Marlows books usually show up in Yuletide, as many of you know much better than I, having written fic for much longer! But sometimes the character list is not as extensive as it might be, so if you would like to offer/receive Marlows fic for Yuletide this year, do consider making a nomination. You'll need an AO3 account to do so.

Edit: it's worth noting that for AO3 purposes, the historical novels are a separate fandom from the 20th-century set books.
[identity profile] lilliburlero.livejournal.com
from the readthrough, I thought it might be good to share some Marlows fic recs. This is a great one, which moves between pre- and post-canon seamlessly, and it should have much more love.

Nelson's Thread (3494 words) by Ankaret
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marlow series - Forest
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

Please add your own fic recs in comments: I'm particularly interested to know about stuff that's not on AO3.

Fanfic.

I know others before me have done fanfic on Ginty in Ireland, but being inspired by the readthrough, and with a bit of time on my hands, I have had a go at it too. It is currently a work-in-progress, and the title is only a working title, and I am liable to go back and change bits, but chapters 1 to 5 are more-or-less finished, and can be accessed following the link.

Spoiler warning: this is set after RAH so refers in places to events in the earlier books, particularly Attic Term and RAH.

I have attempted my first fanfic, on Ida Cross, inspired by a couple of comments in the recent discussion. I'm not brave enough to do any of AF's main characters. This is my first time so I don't even know how to post a link, but here goes, i hope it works.

I have put my first fanfic onto my journal. I may have lowered the bar sufficiently for others to try too!

Hope you enjoy it and I look forward to reading more from others.

I have it on good authority that the readthrough has inspired some Marlows fic! I'm really pleased, because it was one of my not-so-Sekrit Motives for doing it in the first place. Please do feel free to post in this comm linking to your fic, whether it's on your own LJ or on Archive of Our Own (AO3), or elsewhere. There's never (afaik) been a tradition of posting fic directly to this comm, so I think it's best to stick with that: links only, thanks! Please tag your post 'fanfiction' and any other of the tags on the sidebar that are appropriate (the novel that it relates to, any character).

It would be great to get more Marlows fic on AO3: I know there's a lot that's not archived there, and it's now usually the first port of call for readers looking for work in a particular fandom. There is a short waiting list for an AO3 account, but it is very short these days: less than a day, I'm told.

Just to say that sign-ups are currently underway for Exchange at Fic Corner, a fic exchange for children's/YA fandoms, and the Marlows series is one of those nominated. So if you'd like to write/receive Marlows fic (you do need to be prepared to write in at least two other fandoms as well, but there are lots to choose from, including some mentioned in discussions so far) then head on over and sign up!
For more information, see the LJ comm for the exchange: [livejournal.com profile] fic_corner.
