Who's read it?
Who likes it?
Why?
Better or worse than the Marlow books?

I like it - there's a lot of 'same stuff' to the Marlow books - like Neil and his falconrie. Ellen reminds me of Nick but also of Rowan.

And when I find the time to finish fan-fics rather than just starting them, I may write a crossover that has Patrick meeting Kathy, because I'd love to see how their different moral worlds collide.

It's a while ago that I read it, but I remember thinking the Marlows in Hampstead might have been like that. Not so much with the babies, of course, but the library books felt very Marlow. I liked it, but it suffered from not having the familiar characters.

Jamie always reminded me of a young Lawrie. I've never particularly identified the others with any Marlows, and Kathie in particular is a complete original.

I've read it. I liked it (though I was a bit uneasy about what felt like class-bashing, or rather anti-lower-middle-class stuff: that Kathy's class position and her moral failings were somehow seen as being related to each other in a rather snobbish way - I'd be interested to see what you did with this in a crossover fic, especially since we've already seen Patrick in sustained interaction with non-upper-middle-class characters [in The Thuggery Affair] and he seems to rather like a bit of rough). I love the characterization of the baby, especially since lots of writers don't bother to characterize babies at all. Overall, I guess I think of it the same way as Diana Wynne Jones's Fire and Hemlock: there are some amazing bits in it, particularly to do with emotions and The Consequences Of One's Actions, but I didn't think it was as good as the author's best work.
