So, inspired by a comment in [livejournal.com profile] tabouli's discussion, I wondered if anyone could think of actors or actresses to play the Marlows? Or any of the other characters, for that matter?

We did decide on a skinnier, pointier Orlando Bloom (with yellow contacts) for Patrick...

(Links to the relevant imdb page would be appreciated!)

No one consulted me on Orlando Bloom! Yuck. I'd like to suggest a less American Jake Gyllenhaal instead. Or possibly Zach Braff.

Not sure about anyone else - will think about it and get back to you!

I've never imagined Patrick as particularly skinny - is he ever actually described as such?

I'm sticking by Jake Gyllenhaal. Mmmm.

'Thin and dark with light surprising eyes the colour of his hawk's' - Patrick as first seen by Nicola in Falconer's Lure.

Have to say I can't really see Orlando Bloom in the role, but I am hopeless at casting threads.

Me too. And it would be hard to cast the Marlows because they're all rather alike, plus there's the twins. hmm.

I could, actually, see Orlando Bloom surprising us all in the role. May I have Christopher Ecclestone as Lieutenant Foley, or Anquetil if his agent objects too much to his baddies? But he'd enjoy Foley more.

Actually, I've just thought. Bloom as Foley and Ecclestone as Anquetil would be perfect.

That really works. And of all the books I think Traitor would make the best film; my memories of it are very visual. The lighthouse scenes would be fab, and Anquetil sailing out to find them.

I'd like to make a new suggeston for Patrick if it's not too late: Jonathan Rhys-Meyer (http://www.jrmfansite.org/gallery/vanity/vanity7.jpg) in the recent Vanity Fair film - thin, dark with light eyes (okay not yellow)...

That I could see, actually.

I can sort of see Jake Gyllenhaal as Patrick, but only if I only look at the top half of his face.

I can see Christina Cole (http://www.skyone.co.uk/programme/pgeinterview.aspx?pid=5&iid=4) as both Lawrie and Nicola, though she looks a bit more Lawrie than Nicola to me, somehow. :)

Ooops - IMDB page (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1268047/) here.

As far as Rowan goes, I see a younger Kristin Scott Thomas (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000218/), though if that's what one of the sisters without the real looks looks like I don't know how we raise the bar far enough for Ginty.

Yes, now you mention it. She'd do the sidesaddle bit a treat. :)

Ha!

Genius. ([livejournal.com profile] carmine_rose for casting agent!) There was a girl at my secondary school who was the spitting image of Nicola on the front of the Puffin Cricket Term (see [livejournal.com profile] jediowl's icon) except for being too tall, but alack, by now she'll be far too crusty to play a Marlow (and too Australian, though a good Australian actress should have no trouble with a RP acccent). Oh, and as for Ginty, if Annasophia Robb (http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/3316/Events/3316/Annasophia_Grani_5417586_400.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Robb,%20Annasophia), who played Violet Beauregard in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, could do a decent RP accent, she'll look about right in a year or two. Look at her: tip-tilted blue-green eyes and all! (http://www.annasophiarobb.com/Photos/WhiteCloseUp.jpg)

I could definitely see her as Ginty circa Marlows and the Traitor!

Kristin Scott Thomas is a genius suggestion.

I really don't like the Orlando bloom plan. Re: the girls, has anyone considered the Virgin Suicides Girls?

I can particularly see Kirsten Dunst as Ginty for some reason - although I suppose A.J. Hall is the "prettiest" per se.

I don't know, Kirsten Dunst strikes me as more of a Karen.

From: [identity profile] jen-c-w.livejournal.com
Really? Karen I always imagine far older - even though I know she isn't, and sensible looking.

From: [identity profile] ankaret.livejournal.com
It's all very much in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? Maybe I've seen Kirsten Dunst playing too many basically flannel-pyjamas characters.

From: [identity profile] anstruther.livejournal.com
I can see Kirsten Dunst as Karen. She doesn't do it for me as Ginty, Ginty's supposed to be beautiful and Kirsten Dunst, while incredibly pretty, doesn't make it into that league for me - she's gorgeous but too girl-next-door.

Am going to go out on a limb and go with Jessica Alba in Sin City: here (http://www.allmoviephoto.com/photo/2005_sin_city_050.html), here (http://www.allmoviephoto.com/photo/2005_sin_city_013.html) and here (http://www.allmoviephoto.com/photo/2005_sin_city_010.html).

But it might just be the hair!

obviously I mean A.J. Cook - I am clearly far too involved in lj land...

If time was no object, I would have a young Noah Taylor as Patrick. I could also see Daniela Nardini (minus the scottish accent) as Rowan - she has the right line in sarcasm, no? And perhaps Gregory Peck as COmmander Marlow.

The problem is you really need some early teenage actors

Sorry but Daniela Nardini can't possibly be Rowan, her characters are always way too emotionally unstable. Rowan would never dash behind the combine harvester to snort a few lines of cocaine. Plus Rowan has curly blonde hair....

From: [identity profile] blonde222.livejournal.com
Can you really see Daniela Nardini in wellington boots, competently supervising the milking and discussing crop yields with Mr Tranter? Or playing netball and cricket in a steady, sportswomanlike fashion?

Actually I see her more as Lois Sanger.

Oddly enough, now you've said that, I'm seeing Kirsten Dunst as Rowan - she's played a couple of decent sporty types in her time (and I'm not thinking of Wimbledon).

Commenting on an ancient thread, I know, but on re-reading the books, Ginty IS Gwyneth Paltrow IMO. The unparalleled looks, and the consciously ethereal manner concealing a harder core.
Obviously GP would be too old to play Ginty now, and equally obviously I never thought of her whole reading the books in the 80s.
